Siemens is a global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, operating in the industry, energy and healthcare sectors. The company has around 336,000 employees worldwide (in continuing operations) working to develop and manufacture products, design and install complex systems and projects, and tailor a wide range of solutions for individual requirements. For over 160 years, Siemens has stood for technological excellence, innovation, quality, reliability and internationality.
Siemens offers a wide range of solutions and services in Bangladesh, where its Energy, Healthcare, Industry and Infrastructure & Cities Sectors occupy leading positions. In fiscal 2013, Siemens Bangladesh scored major successes in all four Sectors:
Energy Sector
Siemens won two power plant contracts in Bangladesh in fiscal 2013: the Ashuganj 225-MW and the Ashuganj 450-MW combined cycle power plant projects. Siemens will deliver gas and steam turbines and technical advice to the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies Daewoo Korea and TSK Spain.
With these projects, Siemens will add approximately 650 MW to the country’s national power grid by early 2015. Including existing 150-MW capacities in the Shikalbaha and Sirajgonj plants, respectively, and the 70-MW capacity in the Mymensing plant, Siemens will then contribute over 1,000 MW a day to the national power grid.
Siemens’ energy business in Bangladesh was established in 1968 with the installation of the country’s first steam turbine for Ashuganj Power Station Company, Ltd. In winning the contract for the additional two turbines, Siemens has resumed its partnership with this customer.
In the private sector, Siemens is currently executing a 230-KV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation project for BSRM Steels Limited. In addition, Regent Power Limited, one of the leading power-generating companies in the private sector in Bangladesh, awarded Siemens a 230-kV air-insulated substation (AIS) contract.
Healthcare Sector
Siemens’ Healthcare Sector managed to slightly increase its business in Bangladesh compared to the previous year. After successfully launching the diagnostics (DX) business in the country last year, the Sector was able to sign various contracts with hospitals in the private sector. Major potential for the DX automation business is seen for fiscal 2014, through collaboration opportunities with Indian diagnostic companies such as Thyrocare and Lalpath. Siemens also signed various contracts for computed tomography systems and gamma cameras for the Popular Medical College & Hospital and the Lab Aid Hospital.
Industry Sector
The Drive Technologies Division (DT) was contracted to install drive panels for the Bashundhara paper mill project. Siemens is also supplying special low-voltage AC motors to the Meghna Group for its cement factory (Unique Cement Ltd) to improve the plant’s energy efficiency. DT is continuing to assist Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) with its irrigation projects by supplying low-voltage motors that will be coupled with pumps for irrigation purposes in various parts of the country.
The Industry Automation Division installed automation systems at the demineralization plant operated by Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO). Siemens also completed an energy audit at Novartis Sandoz Bangladesh that led to the modernization of its plant, including automation and low-voltage power systems.
Infrastructure & Cities Sector
Siemens’ Infrastructure & Cities Sector (IC) maintained its strong position in Bangladesh over the past year. Major achievements included the supply of a power substation along with a power distribution system for the Radisson Bay View Hotel, one of the country’s largest five-star hotels, in Chittagong. Siemens signed a contract with Baraka Potenga Power Plant Ltd. to supply, install, test and commission a 50-MW, 33/11kV power plant in Chittagong that can be rented by the government for short periods.
IC launched its smart grid business in the country’s power utility sector by signing a contract with Power Grid Company of Bangladesh. The contract also opened opportunities for Siemens’ energy automation business. Siemens also won contracts to supply, install, test and commission low-voltage switchgear panels and power distribution systems for Color City Ltd., a leading business in Bangladesh’s textile industry, and Mosharaf Composite Textiles Mills Ltd. The contracts were worth around EUR 2 million.
Siemens’ history in Bangladesh dates back to 1956 and the company has since been involved in a number of major modernization and infrastructure development programs. Siemens has been active in railway projects in the country since 1962. The company has long been a major player in the energy sector. Siemens’ medical products, systems and solutions have been the country's technology of choice in the healthcare sector for many years.
